Post kali puja immersions witness violations of cracker rules after 9 PM in Kolkata localities

Following the Kali Puja evening, immersions in Kolkata have seen widespread violations of cracker rules, particularly after 9 pm in localities such as Behala, Sarsuna, Garia, Patuli, and Baguiati. Despite two specific complaints received by the police regarding illegal cracker usage at local Kali Puja immersions, major ghats managed to remain free of banned crackers due to a strong police presence. However, concerns have been raised about the need for equal police presence at local water bodies to prevent the use of illegal crackers.

As Kolkata gears up for the challenges of cracker rule violations and potential loud DJ music during immersion processions in the next 48 hours, Monday's immersions saw approximately 50 at Judges Ghat, 30 at Baje Kadamtala, and 20 at Nimtala Ghat. The focus was largely on local ponds for those worshiping at home and small community pujas. The authorities anticipate a greater challenge on Tuesday and Wednesday, especially if India advances to the cricket semifinals on Wednesday, expecting a late-night spurt of immersions.

A special drive against drunk driving has been initiated, with over 220 cases reported in the city since Dhanteras, including 83 on Diwali night. The police and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) expect over 3,000 idol immersions at different ghats along the Hooghly and an additional 3,000 idols immersed in multiple local water bodies over the next three days.
